Xavi expected to start three centre-backs for Barcelona vs Deportivo Alaves – report

Barcelona are set to take on Deportivo Alaves tonight, in what will be the final match before the international break kicks in.

It is going to be an important game for Barcelona, who are coming on the back of poor results against Real Madrid and Shakhtar Donetsk.

Heading into the game, there were whispers that Xavi might make a few changes to the starting eleven, in a bid to turn things around.

To that end, a recent report from Diario SPORT has listed three potential changes Xavi could make in the starting eleven tonight.

Xavi to start three centre-backs

The first change will be in defence, where Xavi is considering switching Ronald Araujo to the right-back position.

In that case, Jules Kounde and Inigo Martinez could form the central defensive partnership, with either Alejandro Balde or Joao Cancelo operating at left-back.

This could be done in order to add more stability to the backline that has conceded too many goals this season. This manoeuvre will allow Barça to situationally operate as a three-man defence, whenever it is required.

Oriol Romeu to return

The second change will be in midfield, where Xavi is expected to start Oriol Romeu alongside Ilkay Gundogan and Pedri.

Romeu would provide more stability in the middle of the park, while Gundogan and Pedri would be responsible for creating chances for the forwards.

This could be a special game for Pedri, who will be starting for the first time in three months. Frenkie de Jong, meanwhile, remains out injured.

Chance for Lamine Yamal

The third change will be in attack, where Xavi is considering starting Lamine Yamal alongside Robert Lewandowski and Joao Felix.

Yamal has been a regular substitute in recent weeks, but he could be given a chance to start in the absence of Gavi and de Jong.
