Barcelona and Real Madrid presidents expected to meet in Saudi Arabia to discuss Super League

Relations between Barcelona and Real Madrid have been tense due to various reasons, apart from the on-field rivalry.

But when it comes to the European Super League, both clubs are on the same page as they continue to back the controversial project and presented a united front when the CJEU ruling came out earlier this week.

Indeed, both Barcelona president Joan Laporta and his Real Madrid counterpart Florentino Perez welcomed the ruling and continued to stand by the Super League even though top clubs across Europe continue to reject the proposal.

Laporta, Perez to meet in Saudi Arabia

Meetings between the presidents of Barcelona and Real Madrid have become a rare occurrence in recent times with Florentino Perez choosing not to attend the recent El Clasico matches.

But it appears that Joan Laporta and Perez will finally be meeting each other next month, when Barcelona and Real Madrid travel to Saudi Arabia for the Spanish Super Cup.

Indeed, Mundo Deportivo is reporting that after not appearing at the last three away EL Clasicos on Barcelona’s turf, Perez will likely be meeting Laporta in Riyadh when they travel for the Spanish Super Cup in January.

While in Riyadh, they will be able to talk personally about the progress that the Super League can make and the next steps to take to unblock a situation that has received opposition from a host of top clubs already.

Indeed, the ‘Big Six’ of the Premier League, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and PSG, among others, have all rejected the Super League.

Only Napoli have so far appeared open to the idea, while AC Milan and Juventus are yet to make a statement.

Being the only backers so far, Barcelona and Real Madrid will need to continue presenting a united front with regard to the Super League, and a meeting between Laporta and Perez would be the first step in chalking out a roadmap for the future.
