The injury of Gavi, coupled with the early season knocks of Pedri and Frenkie de Jong has raised alarm bells within Barcelona regarding the club’s depth in the midfield unit.
It is no secret that Barça might not be in a position to make too many moves in the upcoming January transfer window. But that hasn’t held back the Catalans from looking into the options available in the market.
Barcelona looking for a ‘new Yaya Toure’
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are in the market for a ‘new Yaya Toure’. They want someone who can provide a strong defensive and offensive base in the middle of the park.
The Catalans have their eyes on someone with the same profile base as Yaya Toure or current Real Madrid starlet Eduardo Tchouameni.
This is hardly surprising, as Barça have found it difficult to find a complete individual in midfield following the departure of Sergio Busquets.
De Jong and Pedri are both talented, but they are better suited to a more creative and offensive role.
They often require someone to orchestrate things from the number six position. Oriol Romeu was signed in the summer, but after a solid start his form has dwindled.
Three targets of Barça
As per the MD report, Barcelona have already set their sights on three individuals, who can potentially fit the mould.
Bruno Guimaraes is understood to be topping the list. The Newcastle United star has enjoyed immense success since moving to the Premier League and has been a Barcelona target for a while now.
Another option is Youssouf Fofana of Monaco. The former Strasbourg starlet has been making waves in French football for a while now and could be a good all-round option.
Lastly, Everton’s Amadou Onana is also a target for Barça. The Belgian has found success in the Premier League since joining from LOSC Lille last summer.
However, signing either of these three players could cost a fortune for Barcelona and the club may require fresh sales, if they are to afford any of them.
