Journalist Tomas Roncero has sensationally claimed that Barcelona forward Joao Felix has always dreamt of playing for Real Madrid and the only reason why he joined Atletico Madrid was to live near Santiago Bernabeu.
After a sensational season with Benfica during the 2018-19 campaign, Felix joined Atletico Madrid in a deal worth more than €120 million. However, the Portugal international never really managed to live upto the hype, prompting him to move to Barcelona on loan this past summer.
Felix always wanted Real Madrid
Felix has enjoyed a run good within the Barcelona first team and although there have been moments of inconsistency, he remains a key player on the roster. Quite recently, the 24-year-old found himself on the scoresheet agianst his parent club as Barcelona beat Atletico 1-0 at home.
Interestingly enough, Roncero claims that his celebration was not at all targeted towards Atletico Madrid. Instead, he wanted to grab the attention of Real Madrid president Florentino Perez.
The Portuguese saw how Jude Bellingham celebrated his goal against Barcelona in Montjuic and he did the same to have Perez’s attention.
“Joao Felix’s dream has always been to play for Real Madrid. He told Jorge Mendes, ‘leave me near the Bernabeu’. That’s why he brought him to Atletico Madrid,” said Roncero.
“The player has been waiting for Real Madrid, but Los Blancos have not called him yet, that’s why he makes demands in his celebrations (against Atleti), to attract the attention of Real Madrid.
“He saw how Bellingham did that celebration when he scored in the Montjuic in El Clasico a few weeks ago and said ‘I, like Bellingham, I want to celebrate like that in Montjuic.’ It was a wink to Florentino,” he added.
Amidst Roncero’s claims, it must be noted that Barcelona are working towards signing Felix on a permanent transfer, as confirmed by club president Joan Laporta, and as far as the player is concerned, he seems pretty much satisfied in Catalonia too.
