In what continues to be a growing concern for Barcelona, star midfielder Pedri is likely to miss the upcoming Spanish Super Cup ties in Saudi Arabia in January.
This comes from Sergi Sole of Mundo Deportivo, who is reporting that the injury that the 21-year-old suffered earlier this month is not as small as initially claimed.
What happened to Pedri?
A day before Barcelona’s last La Liga fixture before the mid-season break against Almeria, the club confirmed that Pedri had suffered a blow in training resulting in a minor injury.
As such, it was expected that he would be out for a couple of weeks, but be ready in time for the matches in early January, starting with his boyhood club Las Palmas.
But, earlier today it emerged that Pedri’s injury was not due to a blow in training but was another muscle issue that had risen up.
And now, MD is reporting that the muscular injury in the key midfielder’s right leg is not as minor as it was reported. It is recommended for him to take it easy as it is in an area where he has already suffered other injuries.
It is claimed that the origin of the injury comes from the match in Valencia on 16 December, before it flared up in training leading to him missing the Almeria clash.
Therefore, the Barcelona technical staff is growing pessimistic about Pedri’s availability for the Spanish Super Cup to be played in Saudi Arabia.
Barça kick things off with the semi-final on Thursday 11 January against Osasuna and the possible final against Real Madrid or Atlético de Madrid on Sunday 14.
When will Pedri return?
The plan is to have Pedri available with at 100% at the end of January as at the moment the Barça technical staff, after having spoken to doctors and physiotherapists, see it as very complicated for him to be fit to play in Riyadh.
The coaches consider it essential that Pedri is fully recovered ahead of a key month in February.
There are important games to come with the final rounds of the Copa del Rey, the last 16 of the Champions League against Napoli, and a league in which there are still 20 games to play and a lot still to be decided.
