Competing against financially affluent clubs from foreign leagues, most particularly the Premier League, has often been an uphill battle for Barcelona in recent times.

In addition to reckless spending, the barriers imposed upon them by La Liga have not done them any favors.

Indeed, the Spanish League keeps a tight rein on the economic sector, preventing teams from fully broadening their scope in the transfer market.

As a matter of fact, the Spanish League was the sixth-biggest spender in the last winter transfer window, falling behind the Premier League, Serie A, Ligue 1, the Bundesliga, and the Saudi League.

La Liga looks to loosen up restrictions

However, Esport3 have come out to provide some relief to teams struggling with financial fair play.

As per the information, La Liga will be more flexible so that teams with excessive fair play can strengthen themselves.

A few seasons back, clubs that went over financial fair play, meaning they spent more money than they brought in, could only spend 25% of what they were able to save.

A few seasons ago, clubs that did not follow financial fair play — that is, that spent more money than they brought in — were only allowed to spend 25% of their savings.

The previous year, that amount was raised to 50%, and in this winter market, 60% of that amount is already usable, and 70% if the revenue generated is from a free player.

As such, Barcelona will certainly be one of the teams to benefit from these new policies.

On the lookout for a midfielder

After Gavi’s season-ending injury, Barcelona were quick to register Vitor Roque in his place. However, Joan Laporta also confirmed the club’s desire to sign a midfield replacement this winter.

With La Liga relaxing their regulations, Barça can find fewer complications in their pursuit of a midfielder, as complying with financial fair play has always been a major obstacle in the past.

Recent reports have argued that the plan within the hierarchy is to sign a pivot midfielder who is also capable enough to play as an interior higher up the pitch, searching for a No. 6 who can also play as a No. 8.
