Barcelona still undecided on the future of veteran defender, meeting held with Deco

Sergi Roberto is one of the players at Barcelona whose current contract stands to expire at the end of the ongoing campaign.

The 31-year-old first captain has found minutes hard to come by in what could very well be his final season at his boyhood club.

Reports have suggested that the Catalans have decided not to extend his contract beyond 2024, although the player himself recently insisted that he wishes to stay put at the club.

No decision made yet

But, now, according to a report from Alex Pintanel, a decision on Sergi Roberto’s future is yet to be made by Barcelona, although his entourage acknowledges that the situation is complicated at this point.

“He is living a complicated and difficult situation,” his entourage told the aforementioned journalist.

The player trained in La Masia signed a renewal last March until 2024 with the option of another year depending on variables that he is unlikely to fulfil.

Several weeks ago, when the Barça captain was injured, the club’s sporting director Deco, and the player’s entourage met for dinner to discuss his future.

What was gleaned from that meeting was that Barcelona have not yet made a decision regarding Roberto’s continuity.

But, the Spaniard wants to stay although he is also aware that the current situation is not the same as it was a few months ago when his renewal seemed to be more on track.

With Joao Cancelo arriving, Roberto is no longer seen as an option at right-back and the emergence of Fermin Lopez has eaten into his minutes in midfield as well.

Despite his lack of minutes, Roberto is seen as a valuable asset in the dressing room with the Barcelona technical staff headed by Xavi delighted with him and regard him as a great professional.

“He is very involved. He’s a very good captain, he looks after the youngsters, encourages his team-mates in difficult moments and puts the team ahead of himself despite not playing practically anything,” dressing room sources reveal.

Xavi cites him as an example to the dressing room for his professionalism, commitment, and the work he puts in during training sessions.

There are no doubts about his commitment towards the club as well, considering that the veteran star accepted a very low salary to renew his contract.

Xavi continues to value Roberto for his experience and versatility. But, as things stand, there is no decision about his future.
