Barcelona target confirms he will not renew contract with current club: “We’ll see what happens”

Claudio Echeverri is steadily becoming one of the most sought-after prospects in Argentine football, following a rapid rise to prominence at River Plate.

At the age of just 17, Echeverri has made six appearances for River Plate and looks destined to become a key player for the first team going forward.

However, the midfielder’s days at River Plate could be limited, as the player himself has confirmed that he won’t be renewing his contract at River Plate.

Echeverri on his future at River Plate

In a recent interview, Echeverri was asked about his future at River Plate, where the player admitted his desire not to renew his contract at the club, which expires on December 31, 2024.

“I’m not going to renew my contract. I’m going to play this year for River Plate, for six more months, and then we will see what happens,” he said (h/t ESPN).

Echeverri’s comments are a clear hint at his desire to leave River Plate, perhaps to earn a move to Europe sometime in the future.

Barcelona among clubs keen on Echeverri

Needless to say, Echeverri has no shortage of suitors from Europe, with Barcelona among the clubs interested in his services.

Manchester City and Chelsea are other suitors for the Argentine whizkid. Barcelona, though, are quite serious about the youngster and are reportedly ready to fork out €30 million on the player.

It remains to be seen whether or not Barça will have the economic capacity to afford such an expensive move. But Echeverri, nonetheless, could be a good strategic investment for the Blaugrana.

The player has shown immense talent during his time at River Plate. As a midfielder, he could add some quality depth to Xavi’s setup.
