After being signed in the summer of 2022, Marcos Alonso was a regular face in the starting XI for Barcelona last season, as Xavi particularly saw his profile as a left-footed center-back useful while defending narrow leads.
However, this term, Alonso’s path has been quite the contrary, with a significant nosedive in minutes on the pitch.
Indeed, the player has played under 300 minutes for the Catalan giants, featuring in a meager seven games.
After losing prominence in the pecking order with Inigo Martinez and Joao Cancelo displacing him, an injury to his back added to the problems, with the player out of action for the last five matches.
Barcelona will announce Alonso’s surgery today
Now, as per Mundo Deportivo, the 33-year-old’s potential surgery was addressed by the club, and they could make an official announcement today detailing the procedure’s time and location.
In order to alleviate the discomfort that is keeping him from playing or exercising regularly, Barça’s medical services and the player have been evaluating the situation in these final days of the year, and the player has already opened up to the possibility of having surgery.
Could be out for a while
Reports have previously made the case that the defender has been persuaded to treat the problem surgically, similar to Marc-Andre ter Stegen, by the team’s medical staff.
After that, he would potentially miss up to two months of action, being sidelined until March, which is usually the business end of the season.
However, given that Alonso’s current deal with Barcelona expires at the end of the current campaign, a summer departure for the 33-year-old looks highly plausible.
