Despite the high level of opposition in the previous two encounters, Barcelona weathered the storm well and ensured their form before the fixtures was improved upon.
Now, another formidable foe awaits Barça, with a clash against Girona, their Catalan counterparts, coming up on home soil.
Girona currently sits in second place in the league standings with a four-point advantage over Barcelona and have proven to be one of the most dynamic teams in Spain so far.
As such, Xavi’s men have a great challenge in front of them, as they will approach the game with the clear intention of reducing the gap between both sides.
Portu picks his favourite
Unsurprisingly, Girona, high in spirits and confidence, believes they have the required temperament to come out with all three points.
Cristian Portu, who plays as a winger for the Catalan side, has backed his side for the win, claiming even the four-point difference in the league standings does not do justice to Girona’s superiority over Barcelona.
“The standings say that we are very evenly matched. We’re above them and if we’re at the top on matchday 15 it’s because we’re doing things very well,” he confidently stated after triumphing 5-2 Orihuela in the Copa del Rey, as quoted by SPORT.
“The team is responding well and we don’t have to be afraid of Barça. We’re going to go to Montjuïc to play one-on-one and to the best of our ability,” he added.
A game of great significance
A win would help Barcelona reduce the gap on the points table to just 1 point, putting the Catalan giants back in the race for the La Liga title, having already won it last season.
But Girona will arguably prove to be one of the hardest challenges yet for the hosts, given their innate consistency and form this season. They have only lost one game this season and that was to league leaders, Real Madrid.
