Chelsea target Victor Osimhen has agreed in principle to sign a new contract at Napoli, sources have confirmed to 90min.

The Nigerian striker's current deal runs out in 2025 and the agreement will extend his stay by a further 12 months, despite the Serie A holders initial desire to tie him down until 2027.

Napoli have moved quickly to ensure an agreement is in place before the January transfer window, but know that a move next summer remains on the cards as Osimhen's new deal will include a tempting release clause.

90min understands that Napoli have agreed to insert a clause worth €120m (£112m) into Osimhen's contract, with the feeling being that any interested party would need to pay that figure to prise him away. Osimhen's camp also insisted that they would not sign a new contract without the clause.

Osimhen's main suitors Chelsea have been well aware that the African Player of the Year has been negotiating fresh terms with Napoli, and footbalboast understands the fact he's close to signing a new deal doesn't impact their plans to move for him next summer.

The only surprise to some may be Osimhen's willingness to sign a new contract after Napoli's official TikTok account openly mocked the 24-year-old for missing a penalty for the club earlier this season.

However, Osimhen recently said that he did not have an issue with the club or president Aurelio De Laurentiis, saying of the incident: “I was not treated badly by Napoli or De Laurentiis. I’m sorry to say this word, but it was a stupid error from somebody who thought he could use a thing like that to joke at a crucial moment.

“I was certainly not happy, but De Laurentiis, his son Edoardo and many at the club have supported me.

"They explained the situation, and even the person responsible for it was really nice to me. That was the most important thing. I spoke to that person and he proved to be deeply sorry. Everything has been solved, so I am happy with them. Now I look to the future to leave it behind. This story belongs to the past."
