Following the departures of Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba in the summer, Sergi Roberto was the only old guard left standing at Barcelona.
Although the veteran midfielder had signed a contract extension with Barcelona in March 2023, it was only for a year.
Roberto even endured a difficult start to the season, struggling with a lack of game-time while a muscle injury further ruined his prospects in the first-team.
Roberto’s comeback
However, the Barcelona veteran has lately made an excellent comeback into the team, thanks to his brilliant performances in the last few matches.
Roberto was indeed a star figure for Barcelona in the recent wins over Almeria and Las Palmas. He was, in fact, involved in three goals in the last two matches for the club.
Since returning from injury, Roberto has shown exceptional quality while his experience has been key in leading an otherwise young setup.
Barcelona yet to start renewal efforts
Despite Roberto’s current form, the midfielder is still slated to leave Barcelona at the end of the season.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barça have yet to make a move, as far as the contract renewal of Roberto is concerned. The club are not entirely sure of the veteran’s continuity, even though Deco is looking for a new midfielder.
Sergi Roberto, for his part, is in no hurry to discuss his future. He has received offers from other clubs, but the midfielder does not want to consider any of them right now.
Barcelona, meanwhile, are likely to make a decision on Roberto’s future a little further down the line. A lot may even depend on how the club fare come the end of the season.
