Barcelona qualified for the final of the Spanish Super Cup following a resounding 2-0 win over Osasuna on Thursday and midfielder Frenkie de Jong has asserted that the Blaugrana, despite some difficulties, played a serious game against a tough opponent.
De Jong was arguably the most influential player on the field and deservedly so, was named the player of the match. The Dutch footballer showed once again that he’s a key player for Xavi’s Barcelona.
After the game, he talked to Movistar + and expressed how happy he was following the win.
“It is true that it has been a long time since we won by two goals but it’s about playing and winning, we played a serious game,” he was quoted by Mundo Deportivo.
“It was difficult to find spaces because they closed very well and were very close together. We needed a little more creativity and in the second it was better. The changes have helped us in that.”
Following the victory, de Jong also hoped that this would be a turning point for his team.
“I hope it is the beginning of that ‘click’. We have to improve, we are improving, it is a fairly new team, with many changes and you need time to get used to your teammates, we have also had many injuries and now the final will be very nice.
About facing Real Madrid in the final, he added, “There are two days to recover, more than enough. We don’t have to travel and we haven’t played extra time either, we will be prepared.”
Lamine Yamal in debt of Joao Felix
Lamine Yamal scored a crucial goal for Barça in extra time, securing their qualification in style. He scored with a great shot after a fantastic play by Joao Felix and while speaking after the game, he thanked the Portuguese, saying,
“Very happy for the passage to the final and for the goal. I thanked Joao because he left me alone in front of the goalkeeper. We are very confident going into the final and we hope to repeat last year’s victory.”
“We are very happy, the coach told us in the talk that we had to have confidence. The one who decides is the coach and I will always be eager and if he gives me the title I will be very happy. I have been looking for a goal for days and I am very happy.”
While speaking about the final, the young attacker said, “There are no favourites, we will see who will win. We are the League and Super Cup champions and if we win we will be very happy.”
