In the last two matches, Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has experimented with Andreas Christensen being deployed as the defensive midfielder.
The talk of using the Dane as a pivot has been around for a while now, and Xavi finally decided to test it in the game against Deportivo Alaves. Buoyed by the positive outcome, the manager repeated the tactic again in the Granada clash and the 27-year-old did well.
Permanent switch on the cards?
Now, MARCA is reporting that Barcelona could consider permanently moving Andreas Christensen to the pivot midfield position next season if they fail to sign a new player.
It is no secret that the Blaugrana intend on signing a new No. 6 come summer with Oriol Romeu failing to have the desired impact.
Names like Amadou Onana and Dion Lopy, among several others, have been linked as possible targets.
However, much will depend on Barcelona’s financial situation in the summer, considering that none of their targets will likely come cheap. And with other positions also in need of strengthening, sacrifices might have to be made in the market.
As such, if Barça are unable to land their desired pivot midfielder in the market, they will consider installing Christensen permanently in the position.
For now, the experiment with the former Chelsea man in midfield will continue and the sporting department will assess and analyse how he fares.
