Earlier today, SPORT published a shock report claiming that FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta had made a play to bring back former sporting director Mateu Alemany to the club.
It was claimed that Laporta had travelled to Mallorca where he met Alemany and discussed a possible return to Barcelona.
However, the report added that the 60-year-old Alemany turned down the approach as he had other ideas regarding his future.
Barcelona deny meeting Alemany
Now, Gerard Romero has come up with an update on the situation, stating that Barcelona have denied meeting with Mateu Alemany to discuss his potential return to the club.
The update clarifies that while Laporta might have visited Mallorca, there was no meeting held with the former sporting director on the day.
Alemany was one of Laporta’s hires after he was re-elected as club president back in March 2021. The 60-year-old did a brilliant job during his time as the sporting director, but opted to step down last summer.
Deco took over the reins as the director and Alemany felt that the time was right for him to move on, although he did help oversee the summer transfer window.
Since then, Alemany has been linked with the role of the sporting director at Atletico Madrid, while there have been rumours of interest in him from English clubs as well.
There had been even talk of the 60-year-old being a candidate for the next RFEF President, although that appears to be off the table.
As far as a comeback to Barcelona is concerned, though, no meeting took place between Alemany and Laporta, and no discussions have been held.
