According to journalist Gerard Romero, Barcelona defender Marcos Alonso could end up at Atletico Madrid in the summer once his contract with the Blaugrana expires at the end of the season.
Alonso, who joined Barcelona in 2022 from Chelsea, hasn’t played for the team since November 2023 owing to a back problem, with his last appearance coming against Shakhtar Donetsk in a 0-1 defeat.
Last month, Barcelona confirmed that the defender underwent a successful procedure to treat the problem. “The player is out and his recovery will determine his availability,” read a statement from the team.
When will he return to action?
Before determining his date of return, it is important to note that Alonso has a contract with Barcelona until the end of the season and while there is an option for another year, it is highly likely that the Catalans will not exercise that.
As for his availability, we recently confirmed that he is most likely to miss the Napoli clash in the UEFA Champions League round of 16. For now, the former Chelsea defender is recovering well but is far from being match-fit.
The 33-year-old recently trained in France and has now returned to Catalonia to go ahead with his recovery.
What will Barcelona do with Alonso?
As reported before, Barcelona are weighing up a move for Atletico Madrid defender Mario Hermoso as a potential free signing.
In return, the team from the Spanish capital would want to sign a replacement and this could come in the form of Alonso.
In this context, the environment at Atletico Madrid appears to be a favourable choice for Alonso, especially if Hermoso departs in June as speculated.
Despite minimal playing time this season due to physical issues, Alonso, a former Fiorentina defender, stands out for his valuable experience and versatility.
His ability to excel as a full-back or centre-back, along with his experience, could make him an intriguing prospect for Los Rojiblancos, and the added advantage is that he would join the team at no cost.
