Barcelona are anticipating a summer of change this time around, starting with the arrival of a new coach, who will be tasked to replace outgoing Xavi Hernandez.

Apart from the manager, Barcelona are expected to make key changes in the first team. One of the focus areas for the board is the fullback department.

According to Mundo Deportivo (h/t FCB World), Barça have plans to rejig the full-back unit with the arrival of key players and the exit of some unwanted stars.

Expected departures

As per the report, Barcelona are anticipating the departure of two players in the coming summer.

Marcos Alonso is a no-brainer. The former Chelsea star clearly has no place in the Barcelona setup and it would be wise for both entities to part ways at the end of the season.

With his contract expiring at the end of the season, a renewal is all but ruled out.

The other full-back in contention to depart, however, is Sergi Roberto.

Like Alonso, the Barça captain’s contract also expires at the end of the season and it appears he might look to move on.

Roberto has offers from Saudi Arabia, among other regions of the world. But a move to the MLS appeals more to the veteran.

How will Barcelona fill the gap?

In order to fill the hole that will left by the departures of Alonso and Roberto, Barcelona have plans to bring back Julian Araujo.

The Mexican international has performed relatively well during his loan spell at Las Palmas this season. He could be an exciting option for the first team next season.

Barça also have plans to promote Alex Valle, who has also enjoyed a stellar loan spell at Levante this term. Along with Araujo, Valle could serve potential options in the fullback unit.

Barcelona’s alternative option, however, is to sign Mario Hermoso. The Atletico Madrid defender’s contract expires at the end of the season and he will thus become a free agent in the summer.

Hermoso is a versatile defender, who can play at both centre-back and fullback. His experience also makesh him an ideal option for Barcelona this summer.
