Although the January transfer market is well and truly over, there is much resentment in the Barcelona camp after failing to sign Lucas Bergvall on deadline day.
The Catalans were close to sealing an agreement with Djurgarden for the young Swedish midfielder, who had even visited the club’s training camp.
But on deadline day, Bergvall made a drastic U-turn and decided to join Tottenham Hotspur, a move that shocked everyone at Barcelona.
Djurgarden justifies Bergvall’s Tottenham move
It is believed that Bergvall’s family was the main factor behind the player’s move to Tottenham, as they believed England would be the right place for the midfielder.
However, Djurgarden themselves had also agreed a deal with Spurs, even though there was no sign or rumours of them even being a part of a conversation with the English club.
Days after Bergvall’s surprise move to Spurs, Djurgarden have now issued a clarification as to how the deal went through at the last minute.
Bosse Andersson, the sporting director of Djurgarden, has suggested that the Swedish outfit were always in talks with Spurs, but the conversations did not come to light in the media until much later.
“We were quietly negotiating with Tottenham, but the media didn’t find out until much later,” Andersson told Fotbollskanalen.
Djurgarden, who will remain at Djurgarden until the end of the season, joined Tottenham for a fee of around €10 million.
Barcelona were also willing to offer the same amount and even had an agreement ready with Djurgarden. In fact, the Catalans were planning the announce the signing on transfer deadline day.
Nevertheless, Barça will look to move on from this missed opportunity and set sights on other midfield talents in the market.
