Pau Cubarsi has become an overnight sensation in Europe following his consistent performances in La Liga over the past few weeks.

The 17-year-old centre-back has become Xavi’s go-to option in central defence, ahead of a seasoned star like Inigo Martinez.

Cubarsi’s maturity, coupled with his ability to read the game have made him a sought-after prospect in European football as well, with several clubs keen on acquiring his services.

Now, Diario SPORT reports that Pau Cubarsi’s rapid rise to prominence could go a step further as he is one of the players in contention to play in the European Championship this summer.

The Spanish federation does not rule out Cubarsi’s inclusion in the Spain team, not only in the Euro but also in the Olympics. The player is eligible to feature in both competitions.

Spain are closely paying attention to Cubarsi’s exceptional performances and considers him an exciting future prospect. Spain have not witnessed such a rapid growth of a defensive player in a while and as such, they are desperate to keep him in the squad for Euros.

The teenage sensation is already on Spain’s preliminary list of the first team for the upcoming international break.

When discussing a potential burnout of the player this coming summer, as happened with Pedri, RFEF argues that Cubarsi may not necessarily meet the same fate.

Crucial months ahead

These are still the initial stages of Cubarsi’s potential propagation to the Spanish national team.

The RFEF are likely to consider the young Barcelona defender only if he continues to superb progression till the end of the season. The same stands for another Barcelona starlet in Lamine Yamal.

That said, Cubarsi’s chances of making it to the Euro could significantly increase if he makes his debut for Spain in the upcoming international break.

Spain are slated to issue the final squad list in May, so the coming months could certainly be crucial as far as Cubarsi’s progression is concerned.
