Barcelona’s 17-year-old full-back Hector Fort has seen a total of 178 minutes of action in his debut season with the senior team in La Liga, which has proved to be more than enough for the board to make a big decision.
According to a report from SPORT, the Barcelona management has decided that Fort will be a part of the first team from next season and once he turns 18, they will offer him a new and improved contract.
Right now, it is to be noted that he is employed under a contract until 2025 but with Barcelona Atletic.
Under the radar full-back with lots of promise
This season, the exceptional displays by Pau Cubarsi and Lamine Yamal within the first team roster have somewhat eclipsed the spotlight from Fort.
The 17-year-old, whenever called upon, showcased his brilliance and his recent standout performance came when Xavi entrusted him to fill the void left by Joao Cancelo’s absence against Atletico Madrid.
The result? The youngster delivered an excellent performance beyond expectations.
Fort is majorly a right-back but thanks to his versatility, his services have also been utilised as a left-back and this is something that Xavi praised after the match,
“Hector Fort was brilliant. It’s not his position, but he did it well. He does not complicate himself, he plays easy, with personality, and without fear. He has a desire to succeed. That’s the key,” said Xavi.
Big things await Fort
People who the player closely aren’t surprised that he is doing well on the team, even though he is young and playing a different position. They say he really wants to succeed at Barça.
After a great game against Atletico, Fort didn’t go back to Barcelona. Instead, he stayed in Madrid with Spain’s U-19 team led by Jose Lana.
When he comes back, Fort will be back in the main team and it is likely he will stay there next season too.
The Catalans will update his contract, which ends in 2025 as they want to give him a better deal when he turns 18.
