With Barcelona searching far and wide in the transfer market for a new defensive midfielder for the summer, the Catalans have been linked with several players over the past few weeks.
Names like Everton’s Amadou Onana, who could cost around €60 million, to Arsenal veteran Jorginho, who will be a free agent in the summer, have all been touted as potential targets for the reigning La Liga champions.
Now, another midfielder has popped on the radars of the Blaugrana as an option to reinforce the pivot midfield position.
Barcelona tracking Morten Hjulmand
According to reports in Denmark, as relayed by SPORT, Barcelona are tracking Sporting CP defensive midfielder Morten Hjulmand as a possible target for the summer.
The Catalan club is understood to have numerous reports on one of Sporting’s most important players, with director Deco looking at him as an option.
Hjulmand joined Sporting CP from Lecce last year and has become an integral player for the Portuguese outfit under Ruben Amorim, a coach who has also been linked with Barça.
Capable of playing in multiple positions in midfield, the Danish international, whose market value stands at €26 million, has registered on Barcelona’s radars.
The interest has been confirmed by Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, who said: “Barcelona are looking at him. Tottenham were previously linked with him, but they are no longer interested in him. Barcelona, on the other hand, are definitely looking at him.”
Considering that Hjulmand joined Sporting only last year and has a contract with the club until 2028, the Portuguese club might hold out for a big fee for their ace midfielder.
Only time will tell whether Barcelona hold genuine interest in the 24-year-old and see him as a serious option to strengthen the pivot midfield position.
