Heading into the summer, Barcelona are set to bid goodbye to Marcos Alonso, whose contract with the club expires at the end of the season.
The veteran defender has endured a difficult season with minutes hardly coming his way before an injury sidelined him for four months.
With his time at the club nearing its end, Barcelona have been looking for possible replacements, with Las Palmas’ Sergi Cardona having been linked with a move.
The 24-year-old’s current contract with the La Liga club expires on June 30 and he would be available for free in the summer, making him an interesting option.
Barcelona cool interest in Sergi Cardona
However, now, Mundo Deportivo reports that Barcelona have cooled their interest in Sergi Cardona and are no longer seeking his services in the summer.
The Las Palmas star is not lacking in quality but Barça are looking at other profiles to make up for the probable loss of Marcos Alonso, who is also out of contract.
At the same time, Real Betis are also very interested in Cardona.
In a recent interview, Cardona stated that he had not rejected a renewal proposal from Las Palmas, contrary to what their club president had said not very long ago.
As things stand, he is likely to leave the Canary Islanders as a free agent in the summer, but Barcelona are unlikely to be his destination.
Who will replace Marcos Alonso then?
If Barcelona do not sign Cardona to replace Alonso, the Catalans could look at an internal solution in the form of Alex Valle.
The La Masia graduate is currently on loan at Levante, where he has made a solid impression, paving the way for a possible first-team breakthrough next season.
Furthermore, Hector Fort has also proven himself capable of playing at left-back this season despite being a right-back primarily.
Joao Cancelo, if signed permanently, can also fill in at left-back if needed.
