Earlier this month Barcelona were drawn against PSG for the 2023/24 Champions League quarter-finals.
The Catalans were coming off an impressive win vs Napoli and Atletico Madrid while the Parisians are the runaway Ligue 1 leaders.
This fits very well into the narrative with Luis Enrique being the PSG coach, of course considering his history with Barça.
This fixture has attracted a lot of press already as a result. The Spanish coach also hosted a live stream for his charity Xana Foundation, in dedication to her late daughter.
During the stream, though, Lucho made a rather shocking claim which could ignite a lot of ears.
What did Luis Enrique say?
“Good thing is that we [PSG] lose, at least my club wins,” Enrique was controversially quoted.
He followed that up with another controversial statement, where he jokingly replied to a question from the viewers asking him how much money it would take to play Kylian Mbappe as a centre-back against Barcelona.
He answered, “Not subs, but donate €4 or €5m to this charity foundation and maybe I can rest Kylian. Send me the invoice! (laughs).”
Fans not believing Enrique’s statements
As odd as they look without actual context behind them, PSG fans did not believe the coach’s statements.
In fact, PSG fans have initially community-noted the tweet that revealed Enrique’s statement as ‘unsaid’ and claimed the words to be taken from someone who ‘made them up’.
However, a direct clip of the manager’s words was shared to clear the air.
In thinking that fans would misinterpret his statements, Enrique added that he would do everything for PSG to win, showing that these suggestions were made in jest with the club he supports.
“Yes I am a Barca fan, but I will do everything for my team to win. It’s the law of football! It is my job.”
Surely, a lot of noise about the situation on social media is unavoidable, and maybe the Champions League-winning coach could have made his statements differently with more respect towards the current club he manages.
