Barcelona captain set to extend his contract for one more year – report

The announcement of Xavi’s continuity was the first step in Barcelona’s long summer ahead. Now having clear clarity over the manager, the administration turn towards sealing critical renewals, and Sergi Roberto is one of the players on that list.

The club captain’s contract in Catalonia ends this summer, and news of Xavi’s departure sparked rumours of his exit as well. SPORT now reveal that the club has taken significant steps on the academy graduate’s future.

Another year as captain

As revealed by the outlet, Roberto will continue for one more year at Barcelona and the decision was far easier than appears to the eye.

Despite rumours of Roberto’s exit floating around, Barcelona’s sporting director Deco had decided to offer the veteran a renewal as early as two weeks ago.

Xavi’s continuity has only fuelled the fire and an official announcement can be made even before the end of the season. After all, the manager has been a long-term admirer of his former teammate and his versatile profile.

Future beyond 2024-25

When Roberto signed his renewal with Barcelona last summer, he agreed to an extension of one year with the option of a second condition to the number of games played.

With both parties looking towards a renewal now, however, there will be no need to incorporate the aforementioned clause. His new deal, however, will follow the same pattern.

As it stands, Roberto wishes to only continue for a year before evaluating his situation and form a year from now. Given that his salary is amongst the lowest in the team, it is clear that he places the club over anything else.

A Blaugrana through and through, it is thus only poetic that Barcelona return to Spotify Camp Nou under his leadership later this year. He does have options from the MLS, but that interest can wait another year at least.
