‘I just want to…’ – Luis Enrique declines ‘King of Remontada’ tag after win vs Barcelona

Barcelona saw their hopes of making it through to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals get crushed last night as they were beaten 1-4 by PSG in the quarter-final second leg.

Having come into the game with a 3-2 win in the first leg, Barcelona took an early lead on Tuesday night through Raphinha and progression to the next round appeared set in stone.

However, Ronald Araujo’s red card flipped the script altogether, as PSG forced their way back into the game and goals from Ousmane Dembele, Vitinha, and Kylian Mbappe (two) completed a comeback win.

Luis Enrique doesn’t want to be ‘King of Remontada’

PSG manager Luis Enrique is no stranger to these sort of comebacks or ‘remontada’, having pulled off something very similar when he was in charge of Barcelona back in 2017, against his current employers no less.

Barça’s 6-1 remontada against PSG seven years ago remains the stuff of legends and now Enrique has added another memorable comeback win to his ledger.

So, when asked if he is now the ‘King of Remontada, Enrique replied: “No I just want to play a high-level semi-final.”

The PSG manager then admitted that it was tough on him to face Barcelona and that he hoped he does not have to take on them again, saying:

“It was tough to face Barça. I hope I never have to face them again.”

PSG would have won even if Araujo wasn’t sent off

Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez came out thrashing the referee after the game, stating that Ronald Araujo’s red card killed the tie for his team.

However, Enrique opined that even if Araujo was not sent off and Barça were eleven men on the field, his PSG side would have won.

“Even without Araujo’s red card, we would have won, but I can’t prove it,” he said.

At the same time, Enrique added that he believes Xavi is the right man for the Barcelona job and that he stays at the club, saying:

“Xavi is the ideal manager for Barça. I hope that he continues for many years.”
