Report: Barcelona willing to keep €50 million-rated defender on one condition

Barcelona are highly confident that their center-back duo for the upcoming season will consist of Ronald Araujo and Pau Cubarsi. This decision has raised doubts about the futures of Jules Kounde and Inigo Martinez.

According to a report from AS, if Kounde agrees to play as a full-back for the next season, Barcelona will guarantee his place in the team. However, declining this offer could lead to his permanent sale over the summer.

As of today, Barcelona should not even bother looking for centre-backs in the transfer market as they have got that position well and truly sorted.

In fact, they have more than enough options, especially now that Cubarsi has seamlessly transitioned into the first team.

No matter who takes charge next season, Cubarsi is not going anywhere, which raises the question of what happens with Kounde.

It’s not that straightforward

It is to be noted that Xavi was a strong advocate for signing him, believing it would significantly improve the team’s quality and create a formidable defensive partnership with Araujo.

However, Kounde – whose value stands at €50 million – has ended up playing more as a full-back than a centre-back and it does not seem like this will change next season either.

So if he accepts this new role, he will likely continue with the team. However, if he insists on playing centrally, there might be offers for him as he is in demand in the market.

Of course, the plans for Kounde might depend on the new coach if Xavi doesn’t continue.

Are there any offers?

As reported before, Barcelona are in talks with Paris Saint-Germain over the Frenchman’s transfer. The two teams held talks in recent weeks and it is suggested that Barcelona might consider selling him if the price is right.

Because of his youth, promising talent and most importantly his contract, which runs until 2027, Kounde is indeed highly valued.

However, if a certain Hector Fort makes significant progress next season, Barcelona may find themselves less in need of Kounde’s services.

Considering this possibility, it appears that Barcelona are not completely dismissing the idea of selling Kounde after all.
