Xavi and Deco have identified three positions of interest for Barcelona to reinforce in the upcoming summer transfer window.
The attacking midfield, defensive midfield and left wing are the three chosen positions. Of them, the first is the only department where the Blaugranas have a clear target in mind – Bernardo Silva.
Silva has been on the club’s radar for a long time now and indeed dreams of a move to Catalonia. The club’s financial situation, however, inhibited it from fruition and the operation will not be simple this summer either.
The one manoeuvre
Bernardo Silva’s salary, including the amortisation costs, adds up to a sum of around €25 million per year.
Barcelona, thus, require a massive sale in the form of the departure of a heavyweight to fund the same.
Interestingly, neither the sale of Raphinha nor Ronald Araujo would open up sufficient space on the financial fair play front to accommodate the Portuguese superstar. Only Frenkie de Jong’s sale will create the required leeway.
Further, one must also consider that should Barcelona sell one of De Jong, Araujo or Raphinha, a replacement for the same position becomes a non-negotiable. A potential sale, thus, should create room for not only for Silva but also a replacement.
Willing to ‘sacrifice’
Frenkie de Jong has long been linked with an exit from Barcelona, primarily owing to the long list of suitors he attracts and his market value.
While his performances throughout the season gave many reasons to believe he was essential for the team’s plans, opinions have changed in recent days.
As revealed earlier this month, Barcelona are ready to sacrifice the €70 million rated star to sign Silva this summer and do not see it to be a bottleneck.
After all, the Dutchman has attracted interest from Bayern Munich, PSG and the Premier League and all that remains to be done is to convince the player of a departure.
