Barcelona gunning to stop Real Madrid from achieving historic La Liga record

In the final showdown of the 2023/24 La Liga season, Barcelona are gearing up to face Sevilla, with the hope that Real Madrid won’t match their epic record of points difference between the winner and the runner-up.

It must be noted that the match will go down at Sanchez Pizjuan, and it is expected to be Xavi’s last match in charge. So, naturally, the team wants to wrap things up with a win to keep a special record intact.

Here’s the deal: since the 1995/1996 season, wins in the league have been worth 3 points. Interestingly, the biggest gap between the first and second spot has always belonged to Barcelona, reports SPORT.

Ironically, they ousted their biggest rival, Real Madrid.

A record that Barcelona hold

Let’s take a trip down memory lane to the 2012/2013 campaign. It was an unforgettable season, with Tito Vilanova’s Barcelona clinching 100 points against Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid.

The gap between the Catalans and the Los Blancos was a whopping 15 points (100 to 85), etched in the memories of Catalans and football fans alike.

Real Madrid have a shot at matching this record this season. To prevent that, Barcelona need to at least grab some points against Sevilla or they can cross their fingers and hope that Real Madrid slip up a day earlier, on Saturday against Betis.

What are the permutations?

Currently, Real Madrid have 94 points, having dropped 2 points against Villarreal (4-4) after bagging nine consecutive wins in the League. Barcelona sit in second place with 82 points.

So, Real Madrid need to bridge a 12-point gap, with a maximum of 15 points up for grabs. If they manage that, they will tie Barcelona’s record set by Tito Vilanova.

For what it is worth, Real Madrid won’t be reaching their highest-ever league score this time around, which was also 100 points, achieved during Mourinho’s reign in the 2011/2012 season.

Barcelona trailed with 91 points, losing the title by a 9-point difference.
