Barcelona’s clash against Sevilla later today marks the end of their 2023-24 campaign. The final whistle, however, will also signify the end of a big chapter in the club’s history.
With Xavi’s sacking officially announced by the club, the Spanish tactician will leave the club after today’s game.
Hansi Flick, it appears, is in pole position to replace the Spanish tactician and lead Barcelona into the new chapter.
The presentation date is set for Flick
After weeks of internal debate, the Blaugrana administration decided that Flick was the right man to take over the reins of the first team. A meeting last week in London reportedly finalised the appointment.
Now, Florian Plettenberg reveals that the German coach will officially sign his contract with Barcelona on Monday and the official announcement will arrive on the same day as well.
As it stands, Flick’s contract will see him at the club until 2026 and will not be a 1+1 deal as initially expected.
Considering that the board see him as the architect for a long-term project, it is logical that they hand him a long-term contract.
No time to waste
It goes without saying that since Xavi will oversee his final game on Sunday, bringing Flick on board less than 24 hours later can be considered rushing things.
However, the board’s hurry in finalising the appointment only shows how fast they want his acquisition to move. This is because the coming summer transfer window will see some big moves and that will require Flick’s green light.
For now, it remains to be seen which pieces of Xavi’s puzzle the new manager provides continuity to and the names he chooses to axe. Some big-name departures, at this point, appear inevitable if the manager hopes to bring in his dream targets.
