Barcelona have extended the contract of youth team defender Sergi Dominguez until 2027, confirms a report from Mundo Deportivo.
Dominguez, who is only 19 years old, will continue his career with Barcelona after completing his time in the youth system. He has already played for Barça Atletic this season and has now extended his contract with the club until June 30, 2027.
Although he has not officially signed the new contract yet, it is expected to happen soon.
A Barcelona-born prodigy
It is to be noted that Dominguez was born in Barcelona in 2005 and apart from representing the Blaugrana youth team, he also plays for the Spanish national team’s youth levels. Recently, he has been part of the Under-19 team.
For what it is worth, the 19-year-old joined Barcelona in the summer of 2017 and before that, he played for Sant Gabriel. He started with the Barça Infantil B team and has steadily moved up the ranks.
He played his first game with the reserve team on February 11, 2023, at the Johan Cruyff Stadium in a match against Amorebieta, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Those from the team explain that Dominguez is known for being a very capable centre-back with great skills in positioning and passing the ball.
A representative of Barça Atletic
Despite still being considered a youth player this year, Dominguez has had a strong season with Barça Atletic despite the fact that at the beginning, he was recovering from an injury he got last season.
However, he managed to start getting playing time from the fifth match onward. Up to now, Dominguez has played in 18 games for the reserve team, starting in seven of them, which adds up to a total of 810 minutes on the field.
Besides playing in the reserve team, he has also appeared in three matches in this season’s UEFA Youth League.
Dominguez is described within the club as a young and talented defender who has shown great promise in his early career. Barcelona see potential in him and have decided to secure his place in the team for the next few years.
