Despite Barcelona’s sticky financial situation, the Catalan giants are expected to be on the lookout for new arrivals.
Fortifying the defensive midfield position remains the focal priority in the club headquarters while securing the acquisition of a new forward is also a possibility that is being entertained.
As such, rumours of Barcelona potentially acquiring Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood have been doing the rounds, who is on loan at Getafe and having a solid season.
In fact, Getafe’s president confirmed the suppositions by claiming that Barcelona president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco inquired about the controversial figure.
Barcelona have discarded his signing
However, an update by Toni Juanmarti has downplayed the links, as the journalist claims that Barcelona will not pursue Greenwood due to his controversial past and issues beyond football.
In 2022, Greenwood was arrested on charges related to domestic abuse, which caused a considerable public outcry.
Although charges were eventually dropped, the incident led to Manchester United distancing themselves from Greenwood by loaning him out when he returned to football action.
Now, even though the Englishman is producing a good season with ten goals and six assists from 32 games, Barça seemingly does not wish to associate themselves with the controversial character.
After all, signing the 22-year-old Greenwood poses a risk to Barcelona’s global image and commitment to ethical standards.
Who else could Barcelona sign?
With Greenwood being ruled out of the equation, three options that are gaining the most traction to reinforce the flanks are reportedly Nico Williams, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Dani Olmo.
Given Lamine Yamal is declared the only non-transferable player from Barcelona’s frontline, the club could part ways with one of their forwards and generate the necessary funds to welcome a new face.
It’s uncertain how the club’s frontline will shape up next season, but the chances of incorporating Greenwood are highly unlikely.
