Former Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets, while speaking to DAZN ahead of the weekend’s Formula 1 Grand Prix in Miami, shared his excitement about Xavi’s decision to remain as the coach of Barcelona.
The Inter Miami midfielder, who played alongside Xavi for many years, is pleased with his former teammate’s commitment to leading the team for another season.
In the brief interview, Busquets discussed his respect for Xavi, both as a coach and as a player. He recalled their close connection and Xavi’s influence during their time together.
“Yes, very happy. In the end, if both he and the club want it, I hope it comes with results, which is the most important thing,” the midfielder was quoted by Mundo Deportivo.
His remarks conveyed his optimism for the future of the team under Xavi’s guidance. He emphasized the strong relationship between the players and their coach, suggesting a promising season ahead for the Catalan side.
“This year it couldn’t be, but with a lot of optimism for next season,” he added.
It is to be noted that Busquets had the chance to play under Xavi’s coaching for nearly two years, participating in 84 matches, 77 of them as a starter.
Busquets is happy in Miami
Following Lionel Messi’s departure in the summer of 2021, it was anticipated that Busquets would also leave Barcelona, and indeed, that has come to pass.
Busquets’ role in Barcelona’s midfield was crucial, and both the club and manager feel the absence of the homegrown talent.
Eventually, he chose to step back from European football and joined MLS, reuniting with Messi and Jordi Alba, as well as later with Luis Suarez, to play his final professional years with Inter Miami.
Speaking about his decision, he added, “I’m very happy, honestly, I couldn’t choose a better destination.
“We are very well, very calm and enjoying another type of football. For the family it is spectacular.”
