With Barcelona closing in on a trophyless season and their eternal rivals Real Madrid proving to be head and shoulders above them, the Catalans are necessitated to regain their competitive edge.
And one of the ways they intend to do that is by undergoing a squad revamp in the upcoming summer transfer.
Several Barcelona players face an uncertain future as the prospect of an exit looms large, with Robert Lewandowski in particular being the subject of much speculation.
Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez is one name generating buzz as a potential replacement for the 35-year-old centre-forward.
Nunez dreams of Barcelona
Indeed, according to Mundo Deportivo Nunez dreams of joining Barcelona next season if Robert Lewandowski departs the club.
With the 24-year-old finding it difficult to adapt to Liverpool, reports have argued that super agent Jorge Mendes offered Nunez to Barça. The player is particularly keen on rejuvenating his career in Catalonia.
It is worth remembering that Barcelona had been interested in Darwin Nunez for a while and nearly signed him in 2020.
He was even keen to join Barcelona, but Benfica swooped in with a €24 million offer plus a future sale percentage, outbidding Barcelona and securing the player’s signature.
Lewandowski not willing to budge
As one of the club’s highest earners, Lewandowski’s salary is expected to increase next season, potentially straining the team’s already tight budget.
However, the report adds that Lewandowski has no intention of leaving the club as of now, with the Polish forward intent on fulfilling the one year left on his contract.
With the striker unwilling to hit the exit door, Nunez’s chances of joining Barcelona lessen considerably, due to an excess of options in the front line.
But the summer is long, and if an interested party grabs Lewandowski’s attention, the story may change.
