Journalist Roger Torello from Mundo Deportivo has reported that German manager Hansi Flick, a top candidate for the managerial position at Barcelona, has declined an offer from Chelsea.
As quoted by the reporter, Flick, 59, is only focused on the possibility of coaching Barcelona.
Although several Premier League teams, including Chelsea, have shown interest in him after the Blues announced Mauricio Pochettino’s departure, it is believed that Flick is waiting for Barcelona to make a decision as he has prioritized the Blaugran over other offers he has received.
Flick was considered by Barcelona before
It is to be noted that Flick, who has previously coached Bayern Munich and the German national team, was close to joining Barcelona a month ago.
This was before a meeting at Joan Laporta’s house with Xavi, where Xavi’s position was confirmed after the manager had announced his departure at the end of the season back in January.
However, recent developments at the club have brought Flick back into consideration. Laporta’s dissatisfaction with the club’s current state compared to previous years has opened the door for Flick to potentially lead the team.
Barcelona will soon make a decision
Interestingly, it is suggested that the final decision regarding the managerial position will be made after Barcelona’s game against Sevilla.
A meeting is scheduled for next Monday, which will include Laporta, Xavi, sporting director Deco, vice president Rafa Yuste, and other members of the sports commission, as well as Alejandro Echevarria.
Flick’s agent, Pini Zahavi, also represents Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski has a strong relationship with Laporta.
So, if the Barcelona president decides to part ways with Xavi, Flick is ready to step in as the new coach for Barcelona and the fact that he has rejected a coaching offer from Chelsea tells a lot about his desire to join the Catalan team.
