Earlier this month, reports emerged claiming that Barcelona had shown an interest in signing Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Exequiel Palacios.

It is no secret that Barça are in the market for a new No. 6 and with a move for Joshua Kimmich seemingly ruled out, they are in need of finding alternatives.

As such, it has been suggested that Palacios, who won the Bundesliga with Leverkusen this season, is on the agenda, with soon-to-be new manager Hansi Flick said to be an admirer of the Argentine.

Reacting to the rumours linking him to Barcelona, Exequiel Palacios has now claimed that it is a matter of pride for him that big clubs like the Blaugrana are looking at him.

“It’s a source of pride that such a big club like Barça are looking at me,” said Palacios, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.

Palacios, 25, was an integral part of Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen setup that went on to win the Bundesliga title and the DFB Pokal, while finishing unbeaten in domestic competitions.

The Argentine midfielder, who has been at the German outfit since 2020, made 36 appearances in all competitions this season, even scoring six goals and setting up five more.

Palacios has a contract with Leverkusen that runs until the summer of 2027. As such, signing him might require a significant outlay, which could be an issue for Barcelona.

For now, there is nothing concrete with regard to the club’s interest in the Bundesliga title-winner and it remains to be seen if things develop further in the weeks to come.
