SPORT reports that Barcelona might consider reigniting their pursuit of Amadou Onana due to Everton’s urgent need to sell players before June 30.
This financial pressure on Everton could lead them to lower their asking prices. However, Barcelona are facing their own financial challenges, making it difficult for them to secure transfers before the same deadline.
In any way, Barcelona’s interest in Onana was confirmed by sporting director Deco, who communicated to the player’s agents that they might push for a deal if the transfer fee could be reduced to around €40 million.
Everton’s pain is Barcelona’s gain
This interest stems from Barcelona’s high regard for Onana as a key addition to their new sports project, as Deco reportedly sees him as an ideal fit to strengthen the squad.
Initially, Barcelona’s pursuit of Onana hit a roadblock when Everton demanded over €60 million, leading to the suspension of negotiations.
However, the scenario has shifted dramatically as Everton are facing financial fair-play issues and they need to offload several players before June 30 to avoid further complications.
Their financial woes come from breaches of economic regulations, and failure to rectify their finances could aggravate their situation.
Consequently, they have put multiple players up for sale and despite their initial reluctance to sell key players at reduced prices, the ticking clock and sluggish market activity may force their hand.
Barcelona reignite interest in Onana
As a result, Barcelona have once again begun monitoring these developments, aware that a favourable deal for Onana could be within reach.
The main problem for Barcelona, however, is the fact that even they are are facing economic problems and it is going to be difficult for them to make a move for the player before June 30.
As such, Onana is not only on Barcelona’s radar; other clubs, including Bayern Munich, have also shown interest as well.
For Barcelona, acquiring a physically robust midfielder like Onana could be crucial under Hansi Flick’s tactical plans.
The team’s defensive struggles this season have underscored the need for a player of Onana’s profile to provide balance and stability. Deco, too, supports the addition of a player with Onana’s physicality to enhance Barcelona’s performance.
