Barcelona defender spills the beans on his future: “My representatives will meet with the club”

Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo has shared that he is not overly concerned about his contract extension at the moment, emphasising that it is his agent’s responsibility to handle discussions with the club.

He mentioned that while his representatives are scheduled to meet with Barcelona, he did not clarify whether these talks would be about extending his contract or exploring the possibility of leaving, especially given the significant interest from major clubs like Chelsea, Manchester United, and Bayern Munich.

When asked about his future, he was quoted by Mundo Deportivo as saying, “I am very well, I am calm. I have a contract until 2026.

“My representatives will meet with the club, but now I am focused on the national team,” he added.

Araujo not happy with the season

In addition to contract discussions, Araujo reflected on the 2022/23 season, acknowledging that it wasn’t a successful one for the team.

“By not winning titles, it becomes a bad season, obviously,” he said.

Despite the challenges, he reassured fans that he is physically fit. He addressed concerns about his physical condition, specifically mentioning past knee issues, but confirmed that he is feeling good now.

“I am one hundred percent recovered. Physically I’m fine”

Barcelona want Araujo to continue

It is clear that Barcelona and Flick view Araujo as a crucial part of their future plans and right now, the club is not entertaining the idea of selling the Uruguayan defender.

This decision comes despite the fact that a potential transfer could positively impact their financial fair play situation in LaLiga.

The financial side of things is noteworthy because any profit from a potential transfer would be significant.

Araujo’s initial signing in 2018 cost Barcelona €6.7 million, which includes the variables paid to Boston River in Uruguay. This amount has already been fully amortised, meaning any transfer fee would be pure profit for the club.

The last recorded meeting between Deco and Araujo’s agents, Edmundo Kabchi and Edoardo Crnjar, took place on February 14.

Shortly after this meeting, Barcelona president Joan Laporta got personally involved, expressing his full confidence in Araujo and his intention to renew the player’s contract.
