Girona have their eyes on a number of FC Barcelona players heading into the summer transfer window.
The Catalan outfit are already looking to re-sign Oriol Romeu from their local rivals while also being interested in retaining Eric Garcia after his impressive loan stint at Montilivi.
Now, there appears to be another Barcelona star that Michel & Co. fancy, heading into the next season.
Marcos Alonso on Girona radar
Indeed, as per journalist Alex Pintanel, Girona are interested in Barcelona veteran Marcos Alonso, whose contract with the Blaugrana expires on June 30.
Alonso has been with Barça since the summer of 2022, having arrived for free from Chelsea. The left-back enjoyed Xavi’s trust in his first season, even playing as a makeshift centre-back on several occasions as the team won La Liga.
This past season, though, saw the Spaniard lose prominence, with injuries as well as an increase in competition limiting his minutes.
Barça have since decided not to renew his contract which expires in less than a month, with the left-back set to leave as a free agent.
Atletico Madrid have been keen on signing Alonso for some time now, but they are now set to face competition from Girona.
The Catalan club’s sporting director, Quique Carcel, sees him as a very good option to improve the left-back position, taking into account that Real Madrid could re-sign Miguel Gutierrez after his extraordinary season.
There is nothing concrete at this point, though, as Alonso is still assessing his options before making a decision on his next move.
A move to either Girona or Atletico would allow him to continue playing in the UEFA Champions League while staying in Spain. It is now up to the soon-to-be free agent to choose his next destination.
