Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, has a dream of signing Bayer Leverkusen’s standout player, Florian Wirtz, in 2025 if the club’s finances improve, reports Fernando Polo via Mundo Deportivo.
It is no secret that Barcelona are currently facing financial difficulties and yet, the club is confident that they will regain the ability to make significant signings, as befits a club of its stature.
The hope is to achieve this by the upcoming season under the 1:1 rule, or by the following season at the latest.
Within this context, the sports and scouting departments, led by Deco, are diligently doing their work and Deco is particularly clear about one thing: if he had the financial flexibility, his top priority would be to secure Wirtz.
The young German has a contract with Leverkusen until 2027, making this a potentially expensive signing. However, such significant acquisitions are not new to Barcelona’s history.
Deco is a big fan of Wirtz
Deco’s admiration for Wirtz is not just based on his recent performances. He has been tracking Wirtz for quite some time, given his detailed analysis of international football and particularly the developments within the German team over several seasons.
A noteworthy detail is that when Deco was a football agent, he managed Edmond Tapsoba, a player on the German team’s roster.
Tapsoba joined Bayer Leverkusen in 2020 from Vitoria Guimaraes, which was the same year Wirtz was promoted to the first team at Bayer Leverkusen. This means Deco has had extensive knowledge of Wirtz, having closely followed the team where his client played.
As for Wirtz, he has been a fan of Barcelona since he was a child, and he even expressed his passion for the club early on. This childhood dream could play a significant role if he decides to follow his heart.
Interest in Wirtz is plenty
Meanwhile, it is essential to note that Real Madrid have also shown interest in Wirtz for the next season and this interest is tied to a potential signing of Xabi Alonso, who could replace Carlo Ancelotti.
Additionally, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Paris Saint-Germain have also been linked to the young star.
Barcelona have been gathering detailed information about Wirtz and believes he will remain with Leverkusen this summer, especially as they will be playing in the next Champions League.
Key figures at Barcelona have a good relationship with Simon Rolfes, the general sports director at Bayer Leverkusen and while the German club is keen to keep their star player, they will decide next year whether to entertain offers.
