Discourse surrounding prize money has filtered into the domestic game given the millions that are handed out every season, but we never really hear much about bonuses on the international stage.

Governing bodies are keen to dish out whopping bonuses at the end of every season based on final league position, while UEFA's whopping rewards for those who compete in their competitions have helped widen the gap between the elite and the rest.

The importance of prize money in the modern game can't be ignored at club level, with the effects perhaps more subtle in regards to international football.

For the continent's elite, such bonuses may be inconsequential, but the millions on offer would go a long way in further developing the so-called smaller nations - many of whom performed so impressively in Germany this summer.

Here's everything you need to know about the prize money on offer at Euro 2024.

How the Euro 2024 prize money is distributed

The UEFA Executive Committee agreed on the distribution of prize money at Euro 2024 last December, deciding to stick with the same system in place at Euro 2020.

A total of €331m will be distributed in total by UEFA, with every competing nation receiving a €9.25m participation fee.

There's a €1m bonus for every match won at Euro 2024, as well as €500,000 for a draw. Teams will then receive further bonuses based on how far they progress in the tournament.

Round of 16 participants receive an extra €1.5m, quarter-finalists earn another €2.5m, while a semi-final berth is worth €4m. The winners of Euro 2024 will receive an extra payment of €8m.

The winners, if they win all three group games, can earn up to €28.25m in prize money.

The respective governing bodies of the nations competing at Euro 2024 will receive the prize money from UEFA. They will then decide how to best put the funds to use.

Players aren't paid wages by their national teams - some countries do give out appearance fees, while the likes of England donate theirs to charity - but they do have agreements in place regarding bonus payments and will receive some of the cash on offer. How much they earn, however, will depend on their success at the tournament.

How Euro 2024 prize money compares to Women's Euro 2022 prize money?

While the prize money for the Women's European Championships in 2025 is yet to be confirmed, we can compare the Euro 2024 bonuses to the previous women's tournament in 2022.

UEFA doubled the prize money on offer at Euro 2022, but the total prize fund of €16m made up just a tiny percentage of the total pots at Euros 2020 and 2024 (€331m). So yes, there's still a considerable disparity between the men's and women's games.
