Manchester City will be hungry for revenge in the upcoming 2024/25 campaign after losing out to Chelsea on goal difference in a nail-biting title race last season.

Gareth Taylor has already made some star signings this summer in Vivianne Miedema and Risa Shimizu in an effort to go head-to-head with their existing Barclays Women's Super League rivals.

The additions have helped to create one of the most anticipated frontlines across any club, boasting the likes of Chloe Kelly, Lauren Hemp, Mary Fowler and Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw.

There will be movement on the squad numbers front before 2024/25 submissions are made, but here's the current situation.

City legend Steph Houghton announced her retirement from professional football earlier this year and it's since been confirmed new recruit Vivianne Miedema will wear her number 6 shirt.

Houghton has been the only player to ever wear the number since the club's professionalisation back in 2014. Miedema wore number 11 for the majority of her time at Arsenal, but is used to donning number 9 when representing the Netherlands on the international stage.

City have also confirmed Japan international Risa Shimizu will wear the number 2 shirt in her debut season.

Lucy Bronze was the first owner of the shirt during her first spell at City between 2015 and 2017. Shimizu becomes the fifth different player to the wear the number 2 and the first since Kerstin Casparij during the 2022/23 campaign.

During the summer transfer window, Ellie Roebuck, Demi Stokes, Esme Morgan, Ruby Mace and Filippa Angeldahl have all exited City.

Inside the club, Australia international Alanna Kennedy has taken Morgan's number 14, while midfielder Jill Roord has switched from 20 to 10.

The options up for grabs as it stands are:

  • 1
  • 3
  • 6
  • 12
  • 20
  • 30

Can WSL players change squad numbers?

In the modern game and due to so many players being flexible in their positioning, squad numbers don't have as much meaning as they used to.

Players tend to have the option to choose any number they wish, but certain clubs may enforce specific numbering rules.
