Defeat in Sunday's Euro 2024 final to Spain proved to be his last game in charge of the Three Lions, and he announced his decision to stand down just two days later, releasing a statement to the public.

English football was in ruin when he took the job back in 2016, shortly after the country's infamous Euros exit to Iceland and Sam Allardyce's sacking after only one game in charge.
Gareth Southgate's reign as England manager is over...

Two Finals. One semi-final. Is now the right time to leave? 🏴 pic.twitter.com/9MpphPqKxt
Supporting England before Southgate was miserable, but under him it's been a joy. Gutted that he wasn't the man to end the years of hurt with a trophy, but he did in many other ways. When the success comes it will be because of his work, not as a result of his departure https://t.co/bbJWguOKaH

"He won nothing" like England didn't lose to Iceland, a nation of 300,000 people, in the tournament before the took over. Give it a rest

It’s been a great ride for all involved over the last eight years. Two finals, semi final & a quarter final in Gareth Southgate’s four tournaments is a very tough act to follow! https://t.co/TKnWGZUfkt

Thank you Gareth Southgate for the memories , you’ve gave me and my son memories for life

All the best ❤️🏴 @FA
Restored our pride and joy following the national team and has given us incredible memories.

Was time to move on but deserves to be remembered as a hugely successful England manager! https://t.co/x6HGbOjmov
Gareth Southgate reached more major international tournament finals (2) than every other England men’s national team manager combined (1).

The end of an era. 🫡 pic.twitter.com/iUMqDUbRLS
But should it be held against Southgate that he never managed to take such a talented core over the line?
England have announced that Gareth Southgate will leave his role as England manager 🏴

102 games
64 wins
20 draws
18 defeats
63% win rate
2 major finals
…0 trophies 😢 pic.twitter.com/cvccUiDe3l
Southgate brought back a feeling within England that they can compete for major trophies. You can never take it away from him, has done a very good job but should have really won something with the players he has available to him. Was very much time for a change as Euro 2024 told

So who will take the England job now? The FA are working on a replacement.
FA chief exec Mark Bullingham: "The process for appointing Gareth’s successor is now under way and we aim to have our new manager confirmed as soon as possible. Our UEFA Nations League campaign starts in September and we have an interim solution in place if it is needed."
— James Olley (@JamesOlley) July 16, 2024
While a few names are already in the mix for the position on a permanent basis.
Best tournament gaffer around.

One will be England manager. One will be Newcastle United manager.
If you put two and two together that is.
Gareth Southgate has resigned as the England manager.

Hear me out lads, Graham Potter is the man equal to the task.pic.twitter.com/pk0cJNvRxw
And what next for Southgate himself? Will he return to club management or does something else await him?
Southgate to be Man Utd manager by November.

I hope to god that Maresca is everything our owners believe he is because I really wouldn't put it past them to hire Southgate someday. #CFC #Chelsea #ChelseaFC

You absolutely give Southgate a job behind the scenes. You can't lose the insight he gained. The marginal gains like penalty shoot outs became a different animal under him.
— Tom (@TomFoins) July 16, 2024
But for now, let's take the time to enjoy the work Southgate put in and the great job he did to rebuild the Three Lions.
For the Colombia penalty shootout win, for Kieran Trippier's free-kick, for beating Germany at Wembley, for making Harry Maguire a national hero, for Luke Shaw's thumper, for battering Wales in Qatar, for Jude Bellingham's overhead kick, for Ollie Watkins' clincher, for Cole Palmer's leveller.
It was one hell of a ride.
Thank you Gareth Southgate. Being defensive isn't popular, but it did get results and made some amazing moments and memories. Easily the most successful manager in my lifetime.

I'll never forget the Colombia penalties. Dancing around the streets of Vienna with strangers singing…
Tunisia last minute winner and Colombia penalty win in 2018. The Germany and Denmark games in 2021. Bellinghams overhead kick, the Switzerland penalty win and Watkins’ last minute goal. And of course the Shaw and Trippier goals. Cannot thank Southgate enough for his efforts 🏴 https://t.co/BgIz1AZzWq
