- Man Utd agree contract with Bruno Fernandes
- New terms to make him among highest paid players
- Captain expected to sign deal in coming weeks
Manchester United are reported to have agreed a new contract with club captain Bruno Fernandes, which is set to make him one of the squad's highest paid players.
Fernandes' future had been the subject of transfer speculation following the end of last season, with links to Paris Saint-Germain and the Saudi Pro League. He repeatedly stated his desire to continue at Old Trafford as long as he was wanted, which was left open to perception.
Now, the Portuguese maestro looks set to commit most of the rest of his career to United.
Fabrizio Romano writes that an agreement is in place for Fernandes to sign a new deal for the next three years until the summer of 2027, with the option of a further season until 2028. As part of that, his salary is set to grow to the highest level of the salary structure.
For reference, Casemiro and Marcus Rashford are believed to be the current top earners in the £350,000 to £375,000 per week range. Estimates for Fernandes' existing salary range from £220,000 to £250,000 per week. His current deal is due to expire in 2026.
Fernandes is tipped to officially ink his name on the fresh terms by the end of the month.
If the option year in the new deal is triggered and the former Sporting CP star stays for the duration until 2028, it would expire just over two months before his 34th birthday.
Fernandes has had a huge impact on United in an otherwise difficult period for the club. His whirlwind arrival in January 2020 resulted in an astonishing number of goals from midfield for the next 18 months – 40 in 80 appearances, as well as 26 assists. That level of goal output has slowed since then, with a changing role, but he has still consistently reached double figures and is routinely the most creative United player on the pitch. Fernandes also assumed the captaincy in 2023.
His affinity with the Old Trafford club began long before he joined as a player, first becoming actively interested from afar when he was captivated by fellow countryman Cristiano Ronaldo as a child.
