Former Manchester United captain Katie Zelem has joined NWSL side Angel City on a deal until 2026.
The 28-year-old was among a handful of high-profile players to depart the Manchester club this summer as part of a significant overhaul. She spent six years with the Red Devils, having joined from Juventus back in 2018.
Zelem helped United secure promotion to the WSL in 2019, as well as their first piece of major silverware when they won the FA Cup last season. She made 161 appearances for United across all competitions and scored 32 goals.
In an announcement on Monday, NWSL side Angel City confirmed the arrival of the midfielder on a free transfer. She is their first signing of the August transfer window as they gear up for the final part of the 2024 NWSL regular season.
“I'm thrilled to sign for Angel City and take on this exciting new challenge,” Zelem told the club website. “The opportunity to compete in the NWSL, one of the most competitive leagues in the world, is a huge step in my career. I'm eager to test myself in a new league, against top players whilst contributing to the success of this ambitious club.”
Angel City’s general manager Angela Hucles Mangano added: “Katie Zelem is a wonderful addition to our squad at the perfect time. She has honed leadership skills at high levels as the captain of Manchester United, is a skilled midfielder with an elite-level football acumen, and her desire to bring championships to LA was palpable upon first communication. We are excited to welcome her.”
