Manchester United are reported to be back in talks with Fulham over a possible deal for midfielder Scott McTominay ahead of the summer transfer deadline.

McTominay scored ten goals across all competitions last season, making him the squad's joint third top goalscorer of 2023/24. But the Scotland international has remained largely squad player.

West Ham United made a £30m bid last summer that was rejected.

Fulham have been the club most keen on signing McTominay this year, with two bids up to a maximum of £20m both turned down so far.

That was in early August, but Sky Sports News' Dharmesh Sheth now reported that talks have re-opened. Fulham were not expected to be resume contact over McTominay unless there was a willingness from Old Trafford to negotiate the firm asking price, rumoured to be up to £30m.

But the Cottagers are tipped to now make an improved bid if resurrected talks are positive.

Fulham have so far signed Ryan Sessegnon, Emile Smith Rowe and Jorge Cuenca this summer, without a replacement for Joao Palhinha, who was sold to Bayern Munich for over £42m. McTominay wouldn’t necessarily represent a like for like replacement but is primarily a defensive midfielder.

The other club showing most interest in McTominay in recent weeks is Napoli. The 2022/23 Serie A champions were reported to be in talks but were seeking a loan over a permanent deal, with United's asking price also thought to be out of their immediate reach.

McTominay made his United debut in 2017 under Jose Mourinho and became a more established member of the first-team during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's time charge. To date, he has made 254 appearances, scoring 29 goals, but both of his outings so far in 2024/25 have been as a substitute.
