The change in disciplinary behaviour is marked. Last season, Barcelona accumulated 14 yellow cards for protests over the course of the entire league.
This season, they have yet to receive any. Previously, players like Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Pedri, Gavi, and Frenkie de Jong had been booked for arguing with referees before the fifth matchday.
This season’s calm approach suggests a more composed Barcelona, likely benefiting from their perfect start to the season.
A major factor contributing to this shift is the new rule stipulating that only team captains can engage in discussions with referees. Raphinha, who acts as captain Ter Stegen’s on-field representative, is now the sole player permitted to speak with referees.
This regulation has helped to reduce tensions during matches and maintain a smoother flow of play. Teams are adapting to this change, and most players, with the notable exception of Vinícius, have toned down their protests.
Although Vinicius was shown a yellow card for dissent, further cards have not been issued for similar infractions.
