There is an ongoing war between some of the biggest sports agencies, all centred around Barcelona’s famous La Masia Academy.
According to journalist Jordu Cardero, the next generation of talent coming through La Masia is considered one of the best in recent memory, and this has drawn significant attention from powerful agencies.
Every week, agents visit the Ciutat Esportiva, trying to sign young players who show promise. One of the agencies involved, led by Pini Zahavi, has been particularly active.
They have been attempting to convince the youngsters that they have strong connections with key figures at Barcelona, including President Joan Laporta, coach Hansi Flick, and star striker Robert Lewandowski.
These connections are often used as selling points to persuade young talents to switch their representation.
There are always some offers for these players
Over the past few years, the level of competition and aggression among agencies has escalated. It has become common for players to switch agencies at the age of 16 or just before they sign their first professional contract.
Temptations include long-term career plans and financial incentives, with some agencies even offering money directly to the families of players in exchange for signing on.
One agent shared that his player received a message on Instagram from a third party, offering to help secure a contract by directly contacting the player’s parents.
The third party claimed they had influence at the club and could secure the best deals. However, the young footballer, one of La Masia’s top prospects, ignored the message as he was satisfied with his current agent.
But this is far from an isolated incident. There is even a Brazilian agency offering €3,000 to families if they sign with them.
While the club is fully aware of these tactics, Barcelona prefer to stay out of such matters to avoid influencing the decisions of young players and their families.
At an early age, the club communicates directly with parents, but as the players grow older, agents inevitably come into the picture.
Although the battle for La Masia players is fierce, it is not entirely different from what other top youth academies experience.
On any given Youth League matchday at the Estadi Johan Cruyff or during weekend games at the Ciutat Esportiva, agents can be seen in the stands, keeping a close eye on the next wave of talent.
