Lee Carsley believes Jadon Sancho has 'huge potential' to return to the England squad after securing a successful summer move to Chelsea.

Sancho, who fell out of favour at Manchester United after a public dispute with manager Erik ten Hag, spent the majority of the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Borussia Dortmund. The winger enjoyed a fruitful campaign in Germany, reaching the Champions League final with Dortmund and making 14 appearances in the Bundesliga.

His return to Old Trafford in the summer was expected to be short, with the club remaining vocal on their willingness to part ways with Sancho for good. His move finally came on deadline day as the former England star swapped Manchester for west London and agreed a move to Chelsea on an initial loan deal which will be made permanent next year.

He's already made four impressive outings for the Blues this season, registering three assists and arriving on the radar of England interim boss Carsley.

"Jadon is a player that has huge potential who has hopefully found a home where he feels rated, he feels loved," he told reporters when announcing his squad for upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures.

"He put in a really good performance the other day and I think he just needs time now to play. I don't ever feel in a rush where a player is doing well for three or four games should be in an England squad. Dom [Solanke] has his call-up and earned the right to be called up for England with what he's done this season and the body of work behind."

Sancho's last appearance for England came in 2021, featuring in a World Cup qualification game against Andorra. His last outing at a major tournament came at Euro 2020.

Carsley's experience working with Sancho comes from his time at Manchester City's Academy. The Three Lions boss reached the Youth Cup Final with the Chelsea star in 2017 while managing the club's Under-18 side.

"We were really lucky at City," he continued. "We had a team with Jadon, Phil [Foden], Brahim [Diaz], Lukas Nmecha. We had a really good team."
