Leicester City have confirmed the appointment of legendary Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy on a contract until June 2027.

Van Nistelrooy recently took interim charge of the Red Devils in the aftermath of Erik ten Hag's sacking, leading the club to three wins and a draw from his four games in charge. However, he left United after it became clear he would have no role in Ruben Amorim's regime at Old Trafford.

The Foxes recently sacked Steve Cooper after an inauspicious start to the campaign and quickly lined up the 48-year-old Dutchman as their ideal replacement.

His appointment has now been confirmed, with Leicester revealing Van Nistelrooy will watch Saturday's Premier League clash with Brentford before taking active control of the squad.

He told Leicester's website: "I'm proud, I'm excited. Everybody that I speak to about Leicester City Football Club is enthusiastic. They have great stories about the quality of the people working at the club, the supporters and, of course, the recent history of the club is impressive. I'm excited to start and to get to know everyone and give everything I can for the football club."

Leicester were promoted back to the top flight as Championship title winners under former boss Enzo Maresca, who soon departed to join Chelsea, but have won just two league matches so far this season, with a four-game winless streak eventually sealing Cooper's departure.

Two of Van Nistelrooy's four matches in interim charge of United came against Leicester, sealing comprehensive victories in both the Carabao Cup and Premier League. United are due to visit the King Power Stadium in mid-March.

Van Nistelrooy previously had the manager's job at PSV Eindhoven, leading the Dutch giants to the Johan Cruyff Shield and KNVB Cup.
