West Ham United revealed that their long-serving striker Michail Antonio was involved in a road traffic accident on Saturday and is in "a stable condition".

The Jamaica international has appeared in all 14 of West Ham's Premier League matches this season, scoring once in the 4-1 victory over Ipswich Town at the start of October. Antonio is halfway through his tenth season in east London after joining the Hammers from Nottingham Forest in September 2015.

During a career which has included long spells at right-back and on both flanks, Antonio became West Ham's top Premier League goalscorer, surpassing the tally jointly held by club legends Paolo Di Canio and Mark Noble.

On Saturday afternoon, West Ham released a club statement on social media which read: "West Ham United can confirm striker Michail Antonio has today been involved in a road traffic accident.

"The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the Club are with Michail, his family and friends at this time."

An hour after the initial news broke, West Ham released an update thankfully confirming that Antonio was "conscious and communicating".

"West Ham United can confirm that Michail Antonio is in a stable condition following a road traffic accident this afternoon in the Essex area," the second statement read. "Michail is conscious and communicating and is currently under close supervision at a central London hospital.

"At this difficult time, we kindly ask everyone to respect the privacy of Michail and his family.

"The Club will make no further comment this evening, but will issue a further update in due course."

Antonio was due to be involved in West Ham's upcoming Premier League fixture at home to fellow strugglers Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night.
